When I first started running about five years ago I would use Google to find races. One day I typed in 'Running Race - Scotland - June' and up came The West Highland Way race. I was astonished. I couldn't believe such a thing was possible. It seemed insane. Runners who do this, I thought, must be different - a different species!

Since then, through my club, Carnegie I've been introduced to ultra running. I've come to love long training days on bog and heather. I've learned about the wonders of beetroot juice and flat coke. I've built up race experience with The Fling, The Devil and the Cateran Trail but still - up ahead - looms the mighty West Highland Way. A step into the unknown.

Somehow it doesn't seem so strange now.

I can't wait.
