Splits for previous year's results

Splits for previous year's results

Postby Tim » Wed Jul 06, 2011 2:30 pm

I was rummaging around my hard drive looking for old WHW race results and found copies of the 2010, 2009, 2008 & 2005 results with splits.

If anyone has copies of the full results with splits for any of the other years I'd be grateful for a copy.

Reckon I have a few Tim, but only hardcopy.. Will have a look..

That is a lot of typing to be done if you want to put them all into excel but when done you could have a ball with average times for each section, correlated with weather conditions and phases of the moon... Will need to watch out for and correct heteroskedasticity in the output though..

(Ok so I chucked that word in from my B Econ course of some years ago...I even used to know what it means and could use it in the correct context.. :) )

Looks like I've got 2006 on my computer (can't remember why when 2007 was my first race!) and ought to have 2007 somewhere because I remember upsetting Dario by requesting a correction while he was still pretty busy in the aftermath, but can't find that ATM...

I've sent several years through to Tim, including 2006 and 2007.

I think I've still got some quill pen 'n ink older vintage ones around, but can't yet find the splits for the 1908 race

Thanks to Murdo and Bob Allison, I now have the split results for the years 2010 back to 2003.

I've now uploaded all my archived files to http://www.zen31010.zen.co.uk/Files/WHWresultsarchive/ where you can download the full archive (whwresults.xls) or the individual year results.

The individual year result files mostly contain more data in that they've got the calculated splits and positions in them but many of them have poorly formatted data which I've corrected in my full archive. Dario, bless him, was often a bit careless about his use of full stops instead of colons which makes a big difference in time data!

How about this then, the splits of Dave Wallace (1989 record holder) and Jez Bragg?

It's now in the archive file above. (direct link http://www.zen31010.zen.co.uk/Files/WHW ... splits.xls)

Back in '89 the race finished at the Nevis Bank Hotel so was ever so slightly shorter but I am assured that Dave did run the official route.

Tim, As the PM function keeps cancelling, I'll reply here. In response to race reports from the early years, I'm somewhat reluctant to provide these as my recall is limited. Anecdotal snippets might make interesting reading. Let me know.

Sorry Tim, I wasn't clear in my PM. Dave followed the official route AT THAT TIME, i.e. the road from Lundavra. Lundavra to Fort William by the WHW was UNRUNNABLE, even unwalkable due to forestry work (planting I think) over the first 3 miles.

This makes Dave's route a bit less than two miles shorter overall, also taking account of the earlier deviations, but as you have previously initimated, there were major route disadvantages in the 80s, making it impossible to directly compare performances.

That make more sense although I think the difference is a wee bit smaller than that. I've just measured it out on Memory Map and it 5.58 miles (old route) vs 6.68 miles (new route). It certainly explains how Dave Wallace was able to finish that last section so much faster than Jez but given the fact that so much of the WHW was much tougher back then I don't think it seriously undermines his amazing achievement at the time.
