All time results update

All time results update

Postby Tim » Fri Jul 01, 2011 3:46 pm

I've been playing... ;)

All the results are still on http://www.zen31010.zen.co.uk/Files/WHWresults.xls but I've been sticking a few simple bar charts in displaying the number of finishers per hour for each race back to 2005.

I've not done them all yet because I'm too dim to work out a formula to calculate the number of finishers in each time slot so I've just been counting them manually. Hopefully someone here will put me right.

I've also stuck in a couple of hyperlinks linked to peoples names. Those on the "home page" of name ordered results will link to any general articles about that runner that they'd like linked. Those on the individual race results pages will link to race reports.

When I find time I'll trawl around folks' blogs and stick more links in (working on the basis that if you've already published it on the web you're inlikely to object. :D ) If anyone one rather I didn't please say so.

Excellent stuff. Does the spreadsheet tell why I'm getting so much slower?

In excel try countif([range],[criteria])

Criteria for example could be "AND(<20:00:00,>19:00:00)"

Um, I can't make that work. Assume I'm a complete idiot and the data range is E1:E73 and I want totals for each hour interval. Also using Excel 2000 if that makes a difference.

What exactly would I type?

Thanks to Rock Dodger I've finished the rest of the graphs for the WHW results (simple bar charts of number of finishers per hour).

When you skim through them 1989 sticks out like a sore thumb, every runner (out of 28) finished in under 26 hours. It was also the year in which not one but two runners ran faster than Jez's record pace.

Are there any old timers who can shed any light on what was so special that year?

I've added more links to race reports and will carry on doing so as I find them.

As before, latest version available on http://www.zen31010.zen.co.uk/Files/WHWresults.xls

I think S(a)tan's fled the country with them.

Sorry Thomas, I'm waiting for them too.

Tim, you said:

"All the results are still on http://www.zen31010.zen.co.uk/Files/WHWresults.xls"

but I can access only 1995. Is it just me?

When I could see the all-time results, I think you may have 1984, in place of 1985.

Good work, though!

No, it's me as well, Dunc. But I was keeping mum about it in case it was some kind of age related numpty affliction that I'm suffering from. But now that you've stuck your head over the parapet on your technoshortcomings, I feel safe to "come out" on it (as it were) as well.

And my efforts on getting details of the 1987 race results have come to nought, I'm afraid. Neither of the legendary superstars Dave 'the Balerno Bullet' Wallace, nor Nigel Rose, seem to have the info.

Hi Duncan, I've just notice the year problem with pre-1990 data. Sorry about that. It was down to a couple of hidden columns that I had forgotten about (and then added new ones to replace the hidden ones). Caused me a bit of confusion!

The hidden columns were the results of 87 (no results) and 94 (race abandoned due to flooding).

If you follow the link you should get ALL the data though. It may open on the page that you last opened perhaps. Look at the tabs on the bottom and select the year that you want.

When you've done that, tell us the story of 1989. ;)

Incidentally, I think browsers sometimes do funny things. When I download the data on our Vista laptop, it insists on showing the faulty table as I think this was the last version downloaded. If I download it with my desktop, it shows the updated version.

If you're using Firefox clearing the cache seems to sort the problem.

On mine it's Tools/Options/Advanced/Network tab. Click "clear now".

Aye, All OK now!

I'll get back to you very soon on '89's outstanding average time. The weather was perfect though!

Tim, I don't have the splits but will try and find out who has them.

Tim, I was wondering if it's possible to get all time results and splits put in the 'results' section of the web site. I know nothing about this sort of techy stuff, or how complicated it would be, but fear all the hard work could disappear into the depths of the forum and be hard to find again. Also, any update on this years splits?

Hi Donald,

I don't have any direct input into the race website but I have dropped Ross Bland a line to ask if he can update the link and/or copy the files over to the WHW race website.

As to this year's splits, you need to ask the committee about those. I've not seen any yet.
