Support outside of checkpoints

Support outside of checkpoints

Postby alicia_h » Fri Apr 06, 2012 4:07 pm

Hi all,

Apologies if the answer to this is blindingly obvious, but this is my first WHW race, so bear with me:)

Is it allowed for our support to meet us outside of official checkpoints? I read the instructions about no support at Beinglas/in Glen Falloch (although, as an aside, is meeting at Inversnaid okay?), but other than that, is support outside of checkpoints okay? For example, can I meet my crew at Rowardennan?

Thanks and see you in a few months!

Aye, apart from Bein Glas farm and up into Glen Falloch, you are free to meet and support anywhere along the route.
Rowardennan is a suitable place to use as a feed/service point; it's not a check point but you're welcome to use the car park to set up. The road out there from Balmaha check point is a bit of a nuisance, being narrow and winding, so it's not a compulsory stop. Runners can choose to have a drop bag here instead, if they wish.
Inversnaid is another matter altogether and is very awkward indeed to get to by road, so we do not recommend that you try to service a runner here. Best stick to the drop bag option, which will be handled by Trossachs Search & Rescue staff.

Thanks Sean. So we get drop bags at Rowardennan, Inversnaid, and Beinglas?

Yes, that's the drill.
After the formal checkpoint at Balmaha, where there is plenty of space for parking, the next three sites are all informal checkpoints with drop bag options. Crews may drive to Rowardennan if they wish but parking and road conditions are a bit limited, so some avoid that section and have three drop bags in a row- Rowardennan, Inversnaid and then Bein Glas farm. Inversnaid is covered by Trossachs Search & Rescue, taking your bags there from the start and they provide first aid and water there as well. We strongly suggest that you don't bother with a crew stop there, as the runner will probably get up to Auchtertyre before the car can!
