2012 Race - Update on Entry Process
There were 259 entries for the 2012 race. We have now reviewed these, and
have identified 21 entrants who we feel do not have sufficient experience
to be given a place in the 2012 race. Hopefully these people will gain
more experience throughout 2012, and will enter again for a future race.
We have decided to accept the remaining 238 entrants to the 2012 race. We
believe we can do this and still be confident that the starting field will
not exceed 200, as there will inevitably be withdrawals between now and
race day. As a result of this we will not allocate any further places
until the number of people on the start list falls below 200. In the
event that the entry list falls below 200, we would consider accepting
late entries. If you wish to be considered for such a place should the
opportunity arise, please e-mail me at
ianbeattie@westhighlandwayrace.org.
If at any stage you need to withdraw from the 2012 race, please advise me
by e-mail at the same address as above. If your withdrawal is advised on
or before 31 May 2012, £55 of your entry fee will be refunded. No refunds
will be made for withdrawals advised after 31 May 2012.
Ian Beattie
Race Director

Please note that entry to the
race will be determined in accordance with the process outlined below –
places are not allocated on a ‘first come first served’ basis.
The entry fee is £80 for
scottishathletics members and £82 for all others.
A refund of £55 will be made
to any entrant who gives notice of their withdrawal from the race on or
before
31st May 2012. No refund
will be made to any entrant who gives notice of withdrawal after 31st May
2012.
West Highland Way Race -
Process for allocating places
Objective
The race committee's objective is to establish a fair, simple and
transparent process for the allocation of places in the event that the
race is over-subscribed.
Entry Process
The race has an entry limit
of 200 runners.
All entries must be submitted by completing all sections of the standard
electronic format on the dedicated race entry site, and must include
appropriate credit or debit card details to allow payment of the race
entry fee to be taken. Payment will only be taken if the entry is
successful. Entries will remain open for a period of approximately one
month, with the actual dates specified on the website and on the form. At
the end of the open period all entries will be considered by the
committee, using the criteria set out below. Entries received after the
open period will be considered for inclusion on a reserve list.
Allocation of race places
The following entrants will
be granted automatic entry, at any time prior to the start of the race:
• Bobby Shields and Duncan Watson, the 2 founders;
• Jez Bragg and Lucy Colquhoun, the male and female current record
holders.
A valid entry form must be received on or before the closing date for all
others who wish to take part.
Assuming such a form has been received,
automatic places will be granted to the following:
• Entrants who have completed 5 or more previous WHW races;
• All previous winners of the race, male and female;
• Any entrant who, in the opinion of the race committee, has made or is
expected to make a significant contribution to
the overall success of the race.
All remaining entries will then be reviewed by the race committee, with
the race committee placing each entrant
into 1 of 3 categories:-
1. Those
who they consider have sufficient experience to take part in the race
(fully qualified);
2. Those
required to provide further evidence to the committee that they have or
will have sufficient experience (provisionally qualified);
3. Those
who do not have sufficient experience (rejected).
The decision of the committee
is final.
Assuming sufficient places
are available, all fully qualified entrants will be granted a place in the
race.
If there are too many fully
qualified entrants for the number of places available, a 2 stage ballot
will be entered into for the balance of starting places:
Stage 1 – All entries who have not started the race before (but
have fulfilled the entry qualifications - see below) will be balloted for 25% of
the available places.
Stage 2 – First timers who were unsuccessful at Stage 1, and all
other qualifying entries, will be entered into a ballot
for the remaining places.
Applicants who are unsuccessful in the ballot process will entered on to a
reserve list and will take priority over those entrants whose applications
are provisionally qualified or whose entries are received after the
closing entry date.
Provisional Qualifiers
Applicants who receive a provisional qualification will be placed on the
reserve list, and will be considered for inclusion on the starting list by
the race committee, as and when they meet the stated qualification
requirement given to them in each case. Please be sure to advise us when
this is met.
Reserve List
A reserve list will be maintained and managed by the race committee.
Entry Conditions
It is normally expected that those
seeking an entry for the first time will have completed at least one
off-road ultra race of 65km or more in the last 3 years. Please provide
full details of any such races completed, including the name, date(s) of
the event and your time(s) and the web address of where the results can be
found.
This section is not required to be
completed by anyone who has completed the West Highland Way race in the
last 3 years, or who has completed 5 or more previous West Highland Way
races.
